Featured non-profit partnerPart of what makes us excited to go to work every day is the knowledge that a portion of the proceeds from everything we sell goes to support non-profits working to protect our environment (a.k.a. our home). 1% For the Planet is a growing global movement of companies that donate 1% of their sales to a worldwide network of environmental non-profits. 1% For The Planet was founded on the belief that the environmental crises that we face today cannot be overcome without the active and sustained involvement of business. August's featured non-profit partnerRainforest Action Network campaigns for the forests, their inhabitants and the natural systems that sustain life by transforming the global marketplace through education, grassroots organizing, and non-violent direct action. RAN believes “that a sustainable world can be created in our lifetime, and that aggressive action must be taken immediately to leave a safe and secure world for our children”. For more information about RAN's environmental advocacy visit: www.ran.org July's featured non-profit partner Millions of gallons of oil have oozed into the water since the April 20th rig explosion in the Gulf of Mexico. Some estimates calculate the oil flow to be up to 60,000 barrels of oil a day—that’s 2.5 million gallons of oil a day contaminating our waters and threatening wildlife and sensitive habitats! And we still don’t know when it will stop. The wildlife casualties are adding up. Hundreds of birds and sea turtles have already been found dead. Hundreds more animals are struggling to survive, drenched in toxic oil. Sadly, this is just the beginning of what’s in store for wildlife in the region due to this devastating tragedy. The National Wildlife Federation has been on the front lines responding to the wildlife crisis unfolding in the Gulf since the BP Oil Spill started on April 20.
Their Louisiana-based staff--already working on existing Coastal Louisiana restoration efforts before the spill--was deployed to help with the initial response. They have been joined by national staff, affiliates in the region and a growing network of volunteers. The National Wildlife Federation is America's largest conservation organization. They work with more than 4 million members, partners and supporters in communities across the country to protect and restore wildlife habitat, confront global warming and connect with nature. January 2009We have chosen the Nevada Wilderness Project as our 1% for the planet recipient for the month of January. The Nevada Wilderness Project is a catalyst for wildlife habitat conservation, wilderness preservation, and smart development of renewable energy. Since 1999, NWP has led successful campaigns to protect more than 2.5 million acres of public land in Nevada as Wilderness, the strongest protection possible, with another 500,000 acres of National Conservation Area. Viva Las Wilderness! December 2008Recently the Santa Barbara area has been hit with voracious fires and threads of mud slides. In light of this, we have chosen a local Santa Barbara non-profit as December's 1% partner. Our thoughts are with our friends in Santa Barbara. Santa Barbara Channelkeeper's mission is to protect and restore the Santa Barbara Channel and its watersheds through citizen action, education, field work, and enforcement. We work on the water and in communities throughout the South Coast to monitor local waterways, restore aquatic ecosystems, advocate for clean water, enforce environmental laws, and educate and engage citizens in identifying and devising solutions to local water pollution problems. We are working hard to prevent the pollution of our local beaches, waterways and wetlands from urban runoff, sewage spills, agricultural operations, oil and gas production, and large municipal and industrial discharges. We are a member of the international Waterkeeper Alliance, which now has more than 175 members worldwide. To learn about water quality and aquatic habitat issues facing the Channel and its watersheds, visit our website at www.sbck.org; while you’re there, sign up for our monthly e-newsletter.
